5 Things Assassin’s Creed III Needs To Avoid

Assassin’s Creed is a perfect example of a franchise that continues to deliver at the top level, driven by a brilliant storyline and a wonderfully inventive multiplayer mode.

The fact it managed to wow yet again at this year’s E3 proves it shows no sign of stopping. However, that’s not to say the series is flawless. There are some important lessons Ubisoft would do well to learn from past games in the series if they want to make sure Assassin’s Creed 3 delivers on all fronts.

1. A Shallow Lead Character

The original Assassin’s Creed introduced us to Altair, a four-fingered stealth badass with more parkour talent than a French teenager. As great as his technical ability was, the reason the player felt a connection with Altair was the story behind his quest. Learning about the Order of Assassins, the hierarchy, Altair’s pride leading to his fall and the subsequent path of redemption were an integral part of what made Assassin’s Creed so good – good enough to have 4 sequels to date.

Assassin’s Creed II delivered to us a legend in the making – Ezio Auditore di Firenze. Ezio’s character development from AC II, via Brotherhood, to Revelations is wondrously crafted. His journey from rebellious teenage upstart to wise Mentor of the Order of Assassins is well documented and over the three games we accompany him through every emotion possible to the extent that AC II and Brotherhood are as much about Ezio as they are the Templar/Assassin battle, or the quest for the Apple of Eden. One of Brotherhood’s most evocative moments comes in the ‘secret’ Christina missions where we learn of the fate of Ezio’s first love.
